zzzAUDIATION – Audiation Station - The Improving Musician



Audiation Station is a series of lessons that uses Music Learning Theory to teach audiation. Motivated students can follow these lessons, and learn to audiate music. 


Initial Audiation Objectives

If we accept Music Learning Theory as a learning model for how we learn music, we need to create a Teaching Model as a vehicle to put Music Learning Theory into action.

MLT tells us that we learn by contrast. Therefore, our initial audiation objectives will include

  • Two tonalities (Major and Minor) 
  • Two meters (Duple and Triple). 

We will learn fundamental harmonic and melodic content for each tonality, and fundamental rhythmic functions for each meter.

Defining a Basic Musicianship

In order to set goals for ourselves, we need to create benchmarks so we know when we have achieved a certain level of proficiency in our audiation. 

I have not so arbitrarily defined a basic musicianship which I call Musicianship Level 1. Once achieved, a musician has basic competency in audiating both tonally and rhythmically. 


Tonal Learning Outcomes

  • To be able to name and sing the resting tone in Major and Minor Tonality.
  • To be able to name, sing, and identify the primary harmonic functions (I and V) in major and minor tonality.
  • To be able to name and sing chord roots of I and V chords in major and minor tonality.
  • To be able to name and sing Basic Melodic patterns in major and minor tonalities.

Rhythm Learning Outcomes

  • To be able to move with Continuous Flow in Space
  • To be able to move to Big Beats and Microbeats in Duple and Triple meters
  • To name and chant Big Beats, Microbeats and Divisions using solfege syllables in Duple and Triple meters
  • To be able to improvise rhythm patterns in Duple and Triple meters

Andrew Mullen is a teacher, folk musician, multi-instrumentalist, song-writer, and lifelong learner. He has taught all levels of students in a number of subjects, and is currently a middle school teacher and curriculum coach in Burlington, Massachusetts. Mr Mullen holds Masters degrees in Music Education and School Administration, as well as certification from the Gordon Institute of Music Learning (GIML) in Elementary General and Early Childhood Music. He is currently entertaining Doctoral scholarships.
